HISTORY:

Since the times of the Ancient Greeks it has been believed that amethyst protects the owner / wearer from drunkenness. The word Amethyst originates from the Greek word Amethystos - a (not) and methysos (intoxicated). This belief is from Greek mythology; Amethyst was a pure virginial young girl who refused to get drunk. Dionysus became intoxicated with red wine and made unwanted advances towards her. She cried out to Goddess Diana for help who then turned her in to a quartz, which in my opinion is a really odd move on Diana’s part. Anyway, Dionysus felt so bad – the stories I have found vary saying that he knocked over the cup, other versions say that his tears of remorse filled the cup until it spilt over the white quartz rock which saturated the wine becoming purple.

This is why the Ancient Greeks would drink from amethyst goblets or drop amethyst in their glasses.

🌙 Amethyst is mentioned in the Bible including the Book of Exodus, where one of the 12 sacred stones in the High Priests Aaron’s breastplate is an Amethyst.
