My Life Last Week

Podcast of the week

My Dad Wrote A Porno

I have loved this podcast for years now and still get so excited when someone hasn't heard it because they have all of it ahead of them. It is such a unique and hilarious situation - basically if you have not heard of it, Jamie's father decided to follow the success of E.L. James's self-published erotica and in his retirement wrote his own book. However, it is full of questionable descriptions such as "vaginal lids" and characters that you cannot believe are in an erotic novel. The three hosts have been best friends since university and they have the kind of laughs that make you laugh. Their reactions and hilarious commentary have made me cry with laughter in public many, many times and it is one of absolute favourite podcasts. I also love the fact that every Friday they have a footnotes episode where they have a celebrity fan as a guest to discuss that weeks chapter.

SPECIAL MENTION EPISODE:

Sheryl Sandberg's Desert Island Disc had me in floods of tears yet was incredibly uplifting at the same time. She is the COO of Facebook and wrote Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, a book that is now in my Amazon basket. Sheryl lost her husband to a heart attack and she started crying multiple times throughout the recording while talking about him, yet every word that came out of her mouth was inspiring and positive - she used her grief and turned it into something inspiring and also discussed what it was like to be a women in charge of a huge company. She is an inspiration and everyone should listen to it, however I especially recommend it to anyone grieving or going through a hard time because Sheryl showed that you can be grieving yet achieving simultaneously.

Book of the week

Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes

This week's I have not been reading a physical book but instead listening to an audio book. It has changed my life because I can now read (or listen) while still using my hands, so if I am cleaning or cooking or walking, I can listen away to a story.

I used Audible and purchased the complete works of Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection, written by Arthur Conan Doyle and read by Stephen Fry! If anyone remembers when Fry read the Harry Potter books, I cannot recommend this audio book enough, not only for the Doyle's work but also Stephen Fry's comforting voice and discussion of why he loves Sherlock Holmes. It is brilliant.

Music of the week

Viva La Elvis - Elvis Presley

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard, with remastered / remixed versions of his most famous songs. I can't even put it in to words, just trust me.

Royal Family - Front Row

Although it is a dance video, I downloaded the track and learnt the dance and it is the best thing I have ever seen:

Tv-Shows of the week

Favourite TV Shows

Life in Pieces

In a similar format to Modern Family, one of my favourite shows, Life in Pieces follows a family, and is light hearted, funny and occasionally touches on serious subjects. It's cast contains a lot of actors I loved in other shows - Zoe Lister Jones, James Brolin and Colin Hanks (Tom Hank's son) and I love the concept - one extended family with each episode made up of four short stories. It also has camios from my favourite on-screen and off-screen couple

Z - The Beginning of Everything

Based on the story of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald (the wife of F Scott Fitzgerald), this show really captures the beauty and tragedy of this couple's love story and the life of the incredible authors and the world's first flapper girl. In my opinion a lot of the film or TV adaptions of Fitzgerald's work doesn't capture the world in the way the books do, but for some reason this story of his life captures it perfectly - the glitz and glamour of 1920s New York, the beauty of Carolina. Christina Ricci is amazing in this show and I was so happy to see her in another period piece after the cancellation of the Lizzie Borden Chronicles which I loved her in.
